Registering for an Account

NYSTRS EmplID
This is a required field used to identify your membership status. Your EmplID (short for Employee Identification number) is a seven digit NYSTRS-specific number. Please refer to your Benefit Profile or Retired Member Profile, or other correspondence from NYSTRS, to find your EmplID. If you cannot locate your EmplID, please be aware that for security purposes, our staff will not be able to provide it over the phone or through email. However, if you contact us at (800) 348-7298, Ext. 6250, we can mail your EmplID to the home address you have on file.


Social Security Number
This is a required field used to identify your membership status. Enter only the last four digits of your Social Security Number.


Date of Birth
This is a required field used to identify your membership status. When entering your date of birth please use the format mm-dd-yyyy and do not enter dashes or slash marks.


Choosing a Username and Password
Your username is your unique identification to your MyNYSTRS account. You must enter your username — and your password (known only to you) — to access your account. Your username should be a minimum of seven characters with no spaces. It must be unique. If you select a username that another member has already registered, you will be asked to choose a new username.  Be sure to choose a password that is secure, yet one you will remember.



Unable to Register
Common reasons for an unsuccessful registration include:
  1. You are using an incorrect EmplID, Social Security Number or date of birth. These are required fields used to identify your membership status.
  2. You are no longer an active NYSTRS member because you have withdrawn your membership or transferred to another NYS public retirement system.
  3. You have already successfully registered for an account. If you are instructed that an account already exists but you cannot remember your username and/or password, click on "Forgot Username" and/or "Forgot password" in the Login box.
  4. You have requested that we not release information about your account, except in writing after a signed, written request from you.

Logging into Your Account

Username
Your username is your unique identification to your MyNYSTRS account. It is not your NYSTRS EmplID. Your username is a minimum of seven characters with no spaces. If you forgot your username, click on "Forgot Username" in the Login box and follow the instructions. If the information you enter matches our records, your username will be displayed.


Change Username
When logged into your account, you may change your username by selecting the "Manage Account" tab and then "Username." Your username must be unique. If you select a username that another member has already registered, you will be asked to choose a new username.


Password
You must enter your password to access your account.  NYSTRS staff has no access to your password and therefore is unable to provide you with it. Your password is case sensitive. Upper and lower-case letters must be typed exactly as entered when the password was set.  NYSTRS staff has no access to your password and therefore is unable to provide you with it. If you forget your password, click on "Forgot Password" in the Login box and follow the instructions for changing your password.


Change Password
NYSTRS recommends that you periodically change your password for security purposes. Once logged into your account, you may do so by selecting the "Manage Account" tab and then "Password."


Security PIN
For security purposes, we require a second layer of security to login to MyNYSTRS. A security PIN (personal identification number) will be sent to you by the method of your choice: phone, text or email. Please keep your contact information current to ensure quick access to your account. If you no longer have access to the PIN options NYSTRS has on file, you may update your information by submitting a MyNYSTRS Account Contact Information (ADM-97) form.

Unable to Login
Common reasons for an unsuccessful login include:

  1. Either the username or password you entered is incorrect. Your username is the unique identifier you selected; it is not your EmplID. Your password is case sensitive. Upper and lower-case letters must be typed exactly as entered when the password was set.
  2. If you incorrectly entered a password more than five times, your account will be locked for a period of time.
If you have forgotten your username and/or password, click on "Forgot Username" and/or "Forgot Password" in the Login box and follow the instructions.
